The Bait Surcharge Program: Research Improves Zinc Phosphide Use for Vole Control in Alfalfa

چکیده

This paper describes several unexpected benefits of rodenticide-registration research funded by The California Bait Surcharge Program. An enclosure-type study was conducted to determine efficacy of single, preand test-bait broadcasts (10 lb./ac.) of 0% and 2% zinc phosphide (ZqP,, CAS #1314-84-7) steam-rolled-oat (SRO) groats to control voles (Microtus spp.) in alfalfa (Medicago sariva). Unexpected research spinoffs resulted from the use of: 1) eight randomly-located, sieved-dirt plots per enclosure to monitor bait distribution, bait removal, and rodentlavim (non-target) activity; 2) a bait-weathering plot and bait-sample analyses to monitor Zn3P2 biodeterioration; and 3) a C++language program to derive theoretical benefit-cost ratios associated with Zn3P2-bait broadcasts.

Spreadsheets, Response Surfaces, and Intervention Decisions in Wildlife Damage Management

An a priori approach to examining the economics of performing management activities to reduce agricultural and resource damage by wildlife is described. Computer spreadsheet procedures are used to derive response surfaces of potential net savings and benefit:cost indices for selected cropor resource-protection activities. Tabular and graphical displays of these indices afford decision-making ai...

Long Term Vole Control in Ontario Apple Orchards

'!he results obtained so far in this 3 year study have shown that the plots with poisoned bait feeder stations suffered significantly less tree girdling than the plots treated with the fall broadcast application of 2% zinc phosphide. Similar timings were also observed in number of voles per plot, however, the vole population was much lower than the previous year. Cbnsiderable interest has been ...

Mongolian Rangelands: Rodent Problems And Approaches To Alleviate Damage

Rodents are a major constraint to forage production for livestock in Mongolia. A technical program to identify the magnitude of the problem and strengthen the research capabilities of Mongolian rodent specialists was initiated in 1994. The Brandt's vole is the most widespread and the most detrimental rodent to the steppes of Mongolia. Limited resources inhibit activities by the Mongolian Plant ...

Assessment of Toxic Bait Efficacy in Field Trials by Counts of Burrow Openings

The Levant vole, Microtus guentheri, is a pest of most of the field crops in Israel. It lives in gallery systems, the openings of which are clearly visible, and is active above ground mainly at night. Its activity was assessed by plugging the burrow openings (holes) and, after three nights, counting the number of reopened holes. The efficacy of control by whole wheat toxic baits was determined ...

Zinc Phosphide Residues in Gray-Tailed Voles (Microtus canicaudus) Fed Fixed Particles of a 2% Grain Bait

This study measured depelted-carcass residues of zinc phosphide (Zn,P,, CAS # 1314-84-7) in 8 (43 and 49) gray-tailed voles (Microtus canicaudus). Six (3$ 39) voles were confined individually in 1.89 dkl(5 gal) plastic pails that contained 5,2% Zn,P2 steamrolled-oat (SRO) groats; 2 voles ( Id and 19) served as analytical (unbaited) controls. Four test voles (3-3 19) died within 7.5 h after bait...
